Lions.
Lions are big cats, lions along with tigers, cheetahs, cougars, puma's, leopards and domestic cats, are members of the cat family. All cats have similar behaviour. Lions live in the dry grasslands area of Africa. Lions are members of the cat family. Lions are carnivores (meat eaters). Lions are of a golden color. A female lion is called a lioness, a young lion is called a cub, and the male lion, he's just called, a lion. Lions live in a group which is called a pride in areas of ground which is called the lions territory. In a lions territory there has to be water to drink, places for the cubs to hide, and lots of animals called prey for the lions to hunt and eat. Lions eat zebra, gazelle, wildebeast, giraffe, buffalo and sometimes small animals. A pride of lions might be made up of two or three males, a group of females and lots of cubs. The lions coats are a sandy yellow color, which helps the lions to hide in sunlight and shade amidst long dry grass. The lioness is smaller and faster than the male. The male lion weighs around 300 kilograms, he is about 2.5 metres long, he has a thick mane around his neck, head, and shoulders which, making him look larger, makes it difficult for him to hunt. The mane turns black as the male ages. Lions have whiskers, big teeth, big paws, big claws, and long tufted tails. Just like the family cat, lions can pull their claws back into their paws. Lions hide their claws in sheaths. The lions use their claws for scratching, catching food, and for fighting other lions. The lifespan of a lion is betweem 15 and 20 years.
The pride.
Lions rest for about twenty hours a day, they spend lots of time lying in the shade. The dominant male looks after the pride. He attacks and chases away hyenas, and other lions who come and try to join, or take away his pride.
Cubs.

A lioness has between two and five cubs. The cubs who weigh about two kilos, are born deaf and blind, the mother and the cubs live in a den where she feeds them on milk from her own body. Every few days the mother, carrying the cubs in her mouth, one by one, by the scruff of the neck, moves them to different hiding places. The cubs open their eyes when they are about two weeks old, and by the time they are about three weeks old they usually have their first baby teeth. The mother takes the cubs to join the pride when they are about six weeks old. All of the other females in the pride help to feed and mind the cubs. The cubs, who start eating meat at about the age of three months, are breast fed milk for around twelve months, by which time they have grown their adult teeth. When a lioness dies, other female members of the pride will feed and raise her cubs.
Discipline.
The lioness discipline her cubs by gently biting them with her teeth, picking them up by the scruff of the neck and moving them from one place to another, and by gently striking (cuffing ) the mischievous cubs with her large paws.
Lions are violent, they punish, clap, smite, strike (lightly or severely), give stripes, beat, wound, cast forth, and kill, slaughter (murder).
Cubs are murdered by strange male lions.A dominant male will fight an intruding male to death if necessary to protect his pride.

Cubs are driven away from the pride by leaders when they are about three years of age. The male lions live on their own or in groups for two or three years, after which they will try to take over a pride by driving out the dominant male. The males stands there roaring and sometimes fighting with one another until the weakest male leaves. Some of the males that are driven from prides do not survive because they are not very good at hunting.
The territory.
A male lion ferociously guards the territory, he walks around sniffing, and he knows when other cats have been on his territory, so he marks his territory with a scent from his body so that other lions know that this is his territory, and if another lion happens to come onto the territory, there is a big cat fight between the males, and the male who wins the fight, wins the right to rule the pride. Female lions work together in teams to hunt and provide food for the pride. The lions hunt gazelles, zebra buffalo, wilderbeasts, and warthogs, they pick the weakest and youngest animals of the herd. The prey, who make it difficult for the lions to catch them by running fast, have few places to hide because the grasslands of Africa are very open. Surrounding them on all sides, the lionesses hide in long grass, and watch the animals, crouching down on their stomaches they quietly creep up on the prey and lurk (wait in secret) to ambush them. Psalm 17:12..When they have crept up close enough, they run out from the grass, and chase the animal, which causes the animals to run, the lioness uses her paw to try and trip the animal over, the other lionesses join in the chase, they grab the back of the animal with their claws, and leaping onto its back they bite and scratch and pull it to the ground where they kill it by suffocation or strangulation. A lioness will put her mouth over the mouth of prey to suffocate it (prevent it from breathing). The kill of a buffalo is quick, the lions bite it on the throat, break its neck, and kill it by strangulation. The male, who sees the kill greedily rushes in to eat his fill. Pulling the prey to pieces he gorges himself and snarls and growls as he angrily feeds on the carcase while the complaining lionesses and their cubs watch and wait. The lionesses eat after the male, and the cubs eat the remaining food last. Some cubs die of starvation. During the dry season when animals have migrated, other lions starve to death because they are forced to hunt smaller prey. Male lions who have left the pride sometimes hunt together. A pride of lions kills one or two animals a week.
Cubs learn to hunt during their young hours of playfulness, and also by following and watching their mothers. Cubs can usually kill an animal at about twelve months of age, they hunt by themselves at about the age of two. Young cubs are curious, they chase moving objects such as leaves, insects, birds, small animals, and other things.
Sleepy lions.
Lions sleep for about twenty hours a day, lions love to sleep. While the lions are sleeping the cubs who do not sleep as much as the older lions, run, jump, and play.
Female lions.
Female lions usually stay with their mother's pride, however, some of them leave and form, or join new prides.
Male lions.
Male lions leave the prides in which they were born, they then live alone, or with other males, until they find and join a new pride.

Where do lions live.
Lions live in the savanna areas (open grassy plains) of Africa. There are also some lions in a reserve called Gir Forest in India. There are lions in safari parks, and lions are also found in zoos.
